Five Signs Your Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

The short answer

Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, warm covers, burning smells, or a fuse box can point to a panel that no longer fits the home. A crowded panel also matters when you add an EV charger, heat pump, or remodel. An electrician should inspect the system before you add new loads.

Why do my breakers keep tripping?

A breaker may trip because a circuit is overloaded, an appliance has a fault, or wiring has a problem. Repeated trips should not be ignored or solved by installing a larger breaker. Write down which breaker trips and what was running, then have a licensed electrician inspect the circuit and panel.

One trip can happen when several high-demand devices run together. A space heater, microwave, hair dryer, and portable air conditioner can overload one branch circuit. If the same breaker trips again, the cause may be more than normal demand.

A breaker that trips when one appliance starts can point to a failing motor, damaged cord, or short circuit. Lights that dim when the compressor starts may also show voltage drop or a circuit that is carrying too much load.

Do not hold a breaker on, replace it with a higher rating, or remove the panel cover. Note the breaker label, the time of day, and the devices in use. Those details help an electrician narrow the problem faster.

Is an old fuse box or panel a problem?

Age alone does not prove a panel must be replaced, but fuse boxes and older panels may lack space, grounding, or capacity for modern loads. Signs such as loose fuses, rust, heat, buzzing, or improvised repairs call for an inspection. Do not touch damaged parts or exposed wiring.

Older homes often have fewer circuits than today’s appliances require. Kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, and air conditioning systems each place heavier demands on electrical service. A panel with old cloth wiring nearby needs careful inspection before upgrades begin.

A fuse that blows repeatedly may signal an overloaded circuit or a fault. Replacing it with a larger fuse defeats the protection built into the wiring. Rust, scorch marks, melted plastic, or a sharp burning odor are reasons to shut off power only if you can do so safely and call an electrician.

Fresno homes also see long cooling seasons. Air conditioners can run for hours during valley heat, which exposes weak connections and worn breakers. Keep the panel area clear, and never store boxes or chemicals against the enclosure.

Do I need a larger panel for an EV charger or remodel?

Maybe. An EV charger, heat pump, workshop, addition, or kitchen remodel can require a new circuit or more service capacity. An electrician must calculate the home’s existing load, inspect the service equipment, and check available breaker space before recommending a panel or service upgrade.

A panel can have open spaces and still lack enough capacity for a new load. The service size, main breaker, meter equipment, service drop, and existing circuits all matter. A load calculation helps show if the system can support the planned equipment.

An EV charger may need a dedicated circuit. A heat pump can add a large electrical load during cold weather, while an electric range, water heater, or workshop tools can add more demand. Combining several projects may change the recommendation.

Before buying equipment, write down its voltage and amperage requirements. Keep the installation manual or product label available. This prevents a design based on guesswork and helps identify whether the panel, wiring, or utility service needs work.

What happens during an electrical panel upgrade?

An upgrade starts with an inspection and load review. The electrician checks the panel, service size, grounding, branch circuits, and planned loads. Local permitting and inspection are generally required for many service changes in Fresno County, and utility coordination may be needed when service equipment changes.

The work may involve replacing the main panel, adding a subpanel, correcting connections, or rewiring damaged circuits. The correct choice depends on the condition of the existing equipment and the amount of power the home needs.

Power must be shut off during the work. Circuits are labeled, conductors are checked, and breakers are matched to the wire size and equipment. A grounding electrode system and bonding connections are also reviewed as part of the installation.

When should I call an electrician about my panel?

Call promptly for a warm panel, burning odor, buzzing, sparks, melted plastic, repeated trips, or visible damage. If smoke or fire appears, leave the building and call 911 from outside. For planned additions, schedule an inspection before buying equipment or starting a remodel.

A warm cover can mean a loose connection, overloaded circuit, failing breaker, or poor contact inside the panel. Buzzing may come from vibration or arcing. These conditions can worsen under heavy summer cooling loads.

If you smell burning insulation, see smoke, or notice sparks, move away from the panel. Shut off the main only if it is safe and you can do it without touching damaged parts. Leave the building and call 911 from outside if there is fire or immediate danger.

Warm cover or burning smellA loose connection, damaged breaker, or arcing may be present.Stay away and call an electrician promptly.
Planned EV charger or remodelThe added load may exceed the existing electrical design.Complete a load review before buying equipment.

Questions people ask

Can I stop a breaker from tripping by replacing it?

No. A breaker trips to protect the circuit from excess current or a fault. Installing a larger breaker can let wiring overheat because the wire may not be rated for the new size. Reset the breaker only once if there is no visible damage, then have the circuit inspected if it trips again.

Does an EV charger always require a panel upgrade?

No. Some homes have enough service capacity and an open space for the required dedicated circuit. Others need a load calculation, panel replacement, subpanel, or service change. The charger’s amperage, the main breaker, existing appliances, and service equipment all affect the answer. An electrician should check these items first.

How can I tell if my panel is overheating?

Warning signs include a warm or hot cover, discoloration, melted plastic, buzzing, a sharp electrical odor, or breakers that trip under normal use. Do not remove the cover to investigate. Keep the area clear, avoid touching the panel, and call an electrician. Leave and call 911 from outside if smoke or fire appears.

Should I upgrade the panel before remodeling?

It is wise to inspect the electrical system before a remodel adds outlets, lighting, appliances, or mechanical equipment. The review can find crowded circuits, damaged wiring, missing grounding, or limited service capacity. Planning early may prevent changes after cabinets or walls are installed. Keep the appliance specifications ready for the electrician.
